Industry Standards

Harmonising standards and terminology is a core mission of CIBJO, enabling accurate communication and transparent supply chains across the global industry.

Complete and accurate product disclosure is key to consumer confidence. Treated and synthetic materials may be legitimately traded and sold, provided consumers are clearly informed.

As essential tools for the industry, CIBJO developed the Blue Books, the most widely recognised and adopted standards for jewellery and gemstones.

Each Blue Book is compiled through consensus among commissions and external experts and is continuously reviewed as a living document.

In 2015, ISO published 18323, addressing consumer confidence in the diamond industry and citing CIBJO's Diamond Blue Book as a principal source.

In 2020, ISO released 24016, defining terminology and grading for single unmounted polished diamonds of 0.25 carat and above.

For both projects, in 2015 and 2020, CIBJO officials served as conveners of ISO working groups.

In 2017, IDC nomenclature was harmonised with the Diamond Blue Book; acceptance of Blue Book rules has become standard practice and is embedded in legislation in multiple countries.

CIBJO provides a number of free guidance materials, such as Do's & Don'ts, guides to classification of natural and cultured pearls, and guidance on laboratory-grown diamonds.

These materials provide operating standards and principles that help raise consumer confidence across the industry.
